аша трехлетняя дочь, впервые приехавшая в США и не изучав­шая до этого английский, вернулась после первого месяца обу­чения в вашингтонской государственной школе. Делясь впечатлени­ями, она сообщила, что каждое утро перед началом занятий в классе дети со всех континентов по команде учителя встают и начинают бо­дрым и веселым голосом говорить одно и то же, совершенно непонят­ное. На просьбу вспомнить хоть какие-то слова, она с трудом назвала «пледж» и «алидзинс» (Pledge ofAllegiance). Мы долго смеялись и пы­тались объяснить дочке, что каждое утро она клянется на верность американскому флагу.

осле долгих уговоров мы решили купить детям двух крысок в со­седнем магазине Petco. Через несколько дней жена позвонила мне и сказала, что дети в слезах, так как обе крыски страшно разду­лись, тяжело дышат и вот-вот умрут. В семье начался страшный пере­полох, каждый как мог старался помочь умирающим существам. Че­рез пару часов отчаянной борьбы за их жизни мы получили 20 новых жизней — наши крыски разродились большим пометом. На следую­щий день я приехал в Petco и попросил разъяснить, почему нам про­дали беременных крыс и что нам делать с парой десятков детенышей. Продавцы от души посмеялись и пообещали заставить всех поставщи­ков крыс проводить обязательную obstetric ultrasonography.

ережив незабываемый ночной торнадо в гостинице Шератон в г. Вичита, штат Канзас, я утром попросил одного из местных жи­телей объяснить, что обычно делают люди, когда их застает торнадо в поле на просторах Канзасщины. Главное не пропустить cumulonimbus cloud или cumulus cloud, которые являются первыми признаками приближающегося торнадо, пояснил он.
